So, my SBF 289 needs her intake and carb gaskets replaced. I don't know why, but I don't trust autozone so I'm ordering from summit. But first I have to figure out what model edlebrock carb I have. I also have to adjust my lifters, might as well do it all at the same time. Anyone have any tips? I've read a bunch of articles/posts and the only thing I'm kinda worried about is removing the distributor and loosing my timing.

On an Edelbrock carb the identifying number is stamped on the front lower left hand corner where the mounting stud is. Call or go to the Edelbrock website to identify it.
As far as timing goes, the easiest way is to get number 1 cylinder at TDC on the firing stroke (after both valves have closed). and observe where the rotor is. Put it back in at the same position as close as possible. You can adjust the timing with a light from there. Valves can be adjusted after that.
An easy way to find TDC is to put a rod or long screwdriver in the spark plug hole and turn over the motor by hand watching the rod/screwdriver for when it stops moving upward. Good luck.

You're more than welcome. Just passing on information I learned over the years.

Just a note. I should have said on the compression stroke just before the power stroke. The ignition will fire the plug before Top Dead Center. Either way, after both valves close, you will be on the compression stroke. Have fun.
